(Talk recorded in November 2016) In this interview, Torsten Wiesel, born in Sweden in 1924, talks about growing up on the grounds of a mental hospital outside of Stockholm, and the effect that the patients had on shaping his worldview and values. Dr. Torsten Wiesel tells us the story of the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of how the brain processes information through the visual cortex. Together with David Hubel, Wiesel used micro-electrodes to monitor changes to a single neuron’s action potential with visual stimuli. Torsten Nils Wiesel studied visual information processing and development in the US during the twentieth century. He performed multiple experiments on cats in which he sewed one of their eyes shut and monitored the response of the cat’s visual system after opening the sutured eye. Torsten Wiesel studerade medicin och inledde sin akademiska karriär på Karolinska Institutet. 1955 flyttade han till Johns Hopkins University i Baltimore. 1973 utsågs han till chef för den neurobiologiska fakulteten vid Harvard Medical School 1973 och under åren 1991 1998 var han rektor vid The Rockefeller University i New York. 1981 fick Torsten Wiesel tillsammans med David Hubel The birth of the idea is from David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel's work, two researchers who were at Harvard, and they got the Nobel Prize in 1981 for their studies of visual physiology, which are remarkably beautiful studies, but I believe some of their work has been extrapolated into the human domain prematurely.
